Free School Meals (FSM)

At Woodside Primary Academy, all children from Reception to Year 6 receive a free school meal every day, ensuring every child has access to a healthy, nutritious lunch.

Although meals are free for all pupils at Woodside, we strongly encourage parents and carers to apply for Free School Meal (FSM) entitlement if they are eligible.

Why is it important to register?

When eligible families register for FSM, the school receives additional government funding which can be used to support children's learning, wellbeing and educational opportunities.

Registering your child may also help you access other support available through the local authority and national schemes.

Holiday Food Vouchers

Children who are fully eligible for Free School Meals may also be entitled to receive food vouchers during some school holiday periods when funded support schemes are available. Eligibility and availability are determined by the local authority and government funding arrangements for that year. Parents are encouraged to ensure their FSM application is up to date so they do not miss out on any available support. [thehub-bet...est.gov.uk]

This wording is safer than specifically promising vouchers every holiday, as funding schemes can change from year to year.

Changes to Free School Meals from September 2026

From September 2026, the Government expanded eligibility for Free School Meals so that children from households receiving Universal Credit can qualify for FSM entitlement under the new criteria. Waltham Forest Council is continuing to process applications and eligibility checks in line with the updated guidance. [thehub-bet...est.gov.uk], [educationh...log.gov.uk]

Who should apply?

You should apply if your family receives Universal Credit or other qualifying benefits, even though your child already receives a free meal at Woodside.

By registering, you can help ensure that both your child and the school receive any additional support available.
