Autumn 2021/22

World Mental Health Day

World Mental Health Day took place in October with the theme being Mental Health in an Unequal World’. During the day, the children engaged in a range of mindfulness activities to promote good mental health. The activities allowed the children to also exercise attributes of the ‘Leader in Me’ where they demonstrated being proactive, approaching things by thinking ‘win win’ and  ‘synergising’ with one another .

World Homeless Day

On the 10th October 2021 people around the world marked World Homeless Day in many varied ways and helped to change the lives of people experiencing homelessness in their local community .As a school, we supported this day by holding a non-uniform day to raise money to donate to the homelessness charity ‘Crisis’. Teachers shared videos in class in order to bring awareness of homelessness in an effort for Woodside children to ‘Sharpen the Saw’ by helping their community.

Harvest Festival Donations (shoe boxes)

We celebrated Harvest this year by working alongside Rotary Shoe Box Scheme. Every class got the opportunity to fill up two shoe boxes with as many gifts for children as they could. Donations included old toys, books, colouring books, pens, etc. This was then sent out to various children's charities across Eastern Europe. As a school we managed to fill over 70 boxes!

Black History Month

During Black History month, pupils at Woodside focused on British Black History through looking at key events, dates and people in British Black History. The purpose was to recognise the effect this has had on forming communities and cultures within the UK. Where possible and suitable, year groups were given a historical event and an influential person that focused on British events and British people.

Anti- bullying week

Anti-Bullying Week took place in November and the theme was ‘One Kind Word’. It was coordinated by the Anti-Bullying Alliance, which is a leading children’s charity the National Children’s Bureau. Odd socks day was part of Woodside’s anti-bullying week! To celebrate that we are all unique, we asked the pupils at Woodside to wear odd socks to school for the day. The day sent an important message to pupils that they should be allowed to be themselves, free from bullying and it also helped us celebrate anti-bullying week in a fun and positive way.

Children In Need

On Friday 19th November it was Children In Need. We marked this day at Woodside by inviting pupils to come to school dressed in a onesie or pyjamas. We then raised and donated money to the charity.

Leader In Me Breakfasts

During our Leader in Me Breakfasts we welcomed over 600 parents/carers/grandparents to Woodside. The focus of the breakfast was on the importance of being in school every day and how this links to our 7 Habits that we follow at Woodside. Children, parents & carers all had the opportunity to take part in a variety of activities focusing on the 7 habits and enjoyed a delicious breakfast!

5 a Day Fitness Introduced to be used at home

At Woodside we strive to give every child the opportunity to take part in sports and physical fitness. 5 a day tv, offers a variety of 5 minute videos that get children up and moving. You can choose from a wide range of get up and join in videos all with music.

Pupil Parliament

Pupils at Woodside who wished to be elected for pupil parliament wrote their own manifestos and presented them to their class. The class then voted for two candidates to go forward to the whole year group. The two pupils from each class then presented their manifestos to their whole year group who cast their vote using a democratic system. We believe pupils having a voice in the school they attend is vital for them to feel a part of building the school’s future and to ensure that the staff understand what is important to those that the school is created for. In addition to this, it helps encourage an understanding of democracy and how a voting system works.  Insert picture

Winter Week

December is winter time for everyone in the United Kingdom, which is surrounded by many festivals celebrated by different faiths, specifically Christmas time. Pupils at Woodside took part in winter based activities and had the chance to apply skills they had previously learnt in Art. Insert picture
