Spelling

Spelling at Woodside

At Woodside, we want children to feel confident when choosing and using words in their writing. In the early years we focus on the most frequently used words and teach them systematically, through the Read Write INC Programme (RWI) and regular songs and rhymes.

We use Pathways to Spell in Key Stages 1 and 2. Through regular and engaging lessons, children learn spelling rules and patterns, explore new vocabulary and develop useful strategies for tackling unfamiliar words.

Rather than simply memorising lists, we teach children to understand how words work, check their own writing and apply their spelling knowledge with increasing independence.

Our aim is for every child to develop the confidence and skills to communicate their ideas clearly, creatively and successfully.

It is expected that accurate spelling should be applied to writing at all times, with high frequency words and topic – specific vocabulary among the non – negotiables.
